Locations of our penpals' schools
Both the Italian and Albanian classes received our packages in the mail last week. They are busily writing replies and their teachers will let me know by email when their letters have been mailed.
One class is in Durrës, which is the second largest city in Albania. It is an ancient city, one of the oldest in the country. The population of Durrës is about 260 000. http://www.durres.gov.al/
The other class we are writing to is in Missaglia, Italy. It is in the northern part of the country in the region of Lombardy. Missaglia is a small community of about 7 800 people. http://www.comune.missaglia.lc.it/

TDSB Homework Policy
It is expected that students take home and complete work not finished in class. After an absence, students are expected to get caught up on work they missed, whenever possible. It may not be possible to catch up on some lessons that involve group work, direct teaching and/or specialized equipment and materials.
In addition, practice and review before tests, working on assignments and projects should also be done at home.

Adventures in the Bone Zone Part 1
On Tuesday, morning Ms Nadja from Scientists in School did a workshop in our class. The students dissected owl pellets and discovered what prey the owls had eaten. We found mouse and vole bones in the pellets and sorted them. Using a picture guide, we pressed the bones into Plasticine to show how the skeleton would be put together. Here are some of the results.

Meet B.O.B.
B.O.B. arrived in our classroom yesterday. It took Mrs Lloyd Thomas a while to put him together. He'll be helping the grade 5s learn about the human skeleton, bones and joints.
Do you know what B.O.B. stands for? Bring the answer written on a piece of paper to Mrs LT tomorrow to win a prize.

Ask a friend or family member to complete the Media and Technology Survey that you brought home today. It will only take them a few minutes. You can read the questions to them if you like. Please return the completed surveys to school on Monday. We will be using the data in our math lesson.

On Their Way
Our introductory penpal letters and self-portraits are now in the post and speeding their way to our new friends in Italy and Albania. It will be very interesting finding out what their communities and daily routines are like compared to ours. We're starting Social Studies with some mapping skills this year and will locate our pen pals' schools to get a sense of where they are located.

Summer Survey
We found out some interesting things about our class when tallying and graphing the results of the "Summer Survey". Together, we created the Success Criteria for graphs and referred to it throughout the process. Here are some of the graphs student partners created.

Welcome to Room 13
Dear Parents & Guardians
I am returning to King George School refreshed after my year off. I very much enjoyed spending time doing the things I like most including travelling, cycling, reading, writing and photography. Learning new things like how to edit films and some new art techniques was most gratifying too.
The rules and routines of TDSB and King George School are in the front of the student agendas and will be reviewed during the first few days of schools.
Here are some routines and expectations specific to our class:
Regards, Mrs. Annette Lloyd Thomas
- Spelling pretests will be dictated on Mondays. Students will make their corrections and complete the weekly activities. Some class time will be given on Mondays and Wednesdays. Completed work will be handed in on Fridays. Final tests will be dictated on Fridays also.
- Homework will typically consist of Math, Writing, Reading Science, Health etc not completed in class; studying for tests; projects and larger assignments; music practice (violin or recorder).
- Agendas must be at school daily and will be checked by the teacher at lunchtime. I will closely monitor students who require extra support to make sure that the information they need is recorded.
- Daily Presentations: As part of the Oral Visual Communications component of our language program, students will take turns giving short daily presentations. These will be first modelled by the teacher. Names will be draw and dates assigned well ahead of time so that students will be well prepared . The topics for the Fall are: September – Souvenir, October – Poem, November – True or False, December – Quiz.
- Pen pals: To enhance our Language and Social Studies programs, I have paired up with two other classes of grade 5/6 students. We will be writing by snail mail to our pen friends in Italy and Albania and learning about their communities and cultures. We will be using the school’s mailing address and students’ first names only.
- Friday Folders: Each Friday, a durable plastic folder, in the picture above, will be sent home with completed, marked work and classroom notices enclosed. Please review your child’s work and return the empty envelopes to school each Monday.
Regards, Mrs. Annette Lloyd Thomas
