Fraction math games

Working in small groups, students created math games to help understand equivalent fractions. They used Cuisinaire Rods, pizza slices and a set of fraction cards. Students taught others to play the games they invented.

Chuck Close Inspired Self-Portraits

Janeen from Lello Art School introduced us to the work of Chuck Close. Inspired by his paintings, we created these self-portraits based on photos that Janeen took of us. Mr Hannah's students joined us for this fun and inspiring workshop. Their pieces were displayed with ours in the gym during the School Council's Art Show and Business Fair held today. All King George classes had Lello workshops and their work was also exhibited. It was fantastic to see so much creativity in one room!

Bridge Building - The Testing Phase

All bridges passed the three tests:
  • Two Hot Wheels type toy cars must be able to pass each other
  • Must support two weights of 200g each
  • Must withstand the "wind test"
All Bridges were less than 50 cm long and were completed on schedule. Six out of nine were long enough to bridge the 30 cm gap. Four bridges were built "under budget", using either less than 40 straws, less than 2 m masking tape, or both.

Well done engineers!

Pirates! The Musical Bandannas

We've gone through many steps to print these amazing bandannas for all King George students to wear during our production of Pirates! The Musical.
  1. brainstormed a list of things to draw, from parrots to treasure chests
  2. sketched out designs on paper
  3. transferred designs to foam plates and carved them in using ball point pens
  4. learned the printing technique
  5. tested our "stamps" using tempra paint on paper
Mrs LT's daughter Jahn cut fabric into enough squares for every student to make a bandanna using our stamps. Today five classes, including Room 13 stamped their bandannas. Two students at a time worked with Jahn to help the other kids print, wash their hands and go back and forth from class.

On Wednesday 26 April we'll help the other classes to print. Teachers will keep the bandannas until the night of the concert when they'll all be worn and taken home afterwards. There are five songs in the musical that different groups of students sing and each group will have a different colour of ink on their white bandannas.
