Grade 6: Electricity
Grade 5: Conservation of Energy
Question: Where is the safest place to be if you are outdoors during a lightning storm?
Question: What are the best energy sources for Toronto in 2013
  1. What can electricity travel through?
    • Students brainstormed a list of materials
    • They built electrical circuits to test the selected materials
    • After testing, they sorted the materials into two groups - conductors and insulators
  1. Students came up with five ways energy is currently being generated in Ontario. (Thermal, nuclear, hydro, wind and solar)
  1. Students are independently researching the answers to these questions
    • What is lightning?
    • How does it happen?
    • How does it behave?

  1. A group of three students is researching each topic to find out:
    • What is it? How does it work?
    • Advantages
    • Disadvantages
3. Students will share their findings and make a list of the safest places to be outdoors during an electric storm
3. Students will share their findings and, by consensus, rank the energy sources using a ranking ladder graphic organizer
