Spelling Counts program starts this week

In the past few weeks, we have practiced all of the activities on the list. 
Students select and complete spelling activities of their choice to accumulate 40 points in total each week.

SPELLING COUNTS

PRETEST OF LIST WORDS - first school day of the week. Printed copies of the list words will be distributed and corrections made in class and checked by teacher.

DIRECTIONS:
§  A total of 40 points must be earned each week.
§  Activities must be done separately.
§  Label activity in the margin.
§  Label the point value in the margin.
§  All work must be completed neatly.
§  Sentences, poems etc must make sense and be related to the topic.
§  Hand in notebook with completed work by Friday or last school day of the week.  
§  Final test on Friday or last school day of the week.

5-POINT ACTIVITIES
ABC order: Write the spelling list words in alphabetical order.
Syllables: Write each word broken into syllables.  Use the dictionary.
No vowels: Write each spelling word without its vowels. Replace each vowel with a line.
Coloured: Write your list words in pencil crayon - each consonant in red and each vowel in blue.

10-POINT ACTIVITIES
Times 5:   Write each spelling word five times.
Scrambled: Write your words with all the letters mixed up. Then ask a friend to unscramble the words. Correct your friend’s work. Each of you earns ten points.
Words in Words: Write each spelling word. Next to each word, write three additional words of at least three letters that can be spelled using the letters in the word.
Parts of Speech: Classify the words according to parts of speech (noun, verb, adjective).
Solved Puzzle: Solve a wordsearch, or crossword puzzle created by someone else.

 15-POINT ACTIVITIES
Sentences: Use each spelling word in a sentence. Maximum two list words per sentence. Correct spelling and grammar count!
Concentration: Work with a partner. Each person writes the list words on scrap paper and then cuts the paper into small rectangles to make playing cards. Shuffle the two sets of words together. Place them face down and play “Concentration”.  
Definitions: Write the definition for each word. Use a dictionary.
Make Puzzle:  Create a word search or crossword puzzle using all of the list words.

20-POINT ACTIVITIES
Story/Poem: Use your spelling words to write a short story or poem. Your story or poem must include all your spelling words and must make sense.
Acrostic: Write acrostic poems with 7 list words. All words must be related to the topic word.

ALTERNATIVE ACTIVITIES

Create or invent your own word game or activity. Negotiate a point value with teacher before starting. Teach it to the class J
