Text to Text Connections (Continued)

In Maniac Magee, Jerry Spinelli also mentions baseball great Willie Mays so we read "You Never Heard of Willy Mays? by Jonah Winter. We talked about why we thought Spinelli chose Willy Mays to be part of his story.

Text to Text Connections

In his novel Maniac Magee, Jerry Spinelli mentions some children's picture books, which we read in class:

  • Lyle, Lyle Crocodile by Bernard Waber
  • The Little Engine That Could by Watty Piper
  • The Story of Babar by Jean de Brunhoff
  • Mike Mulligan and His Steam Shovel by Virginia Lee Burton

We talked about why Spinelli chose these particular stories to appear in Maniac Magee.  In small groups, we made text to text connections and presented to the class.

    Sheldon Centre for Outdoor Education.

As you can imaging, my students were very excited to hear that our class will be going to the Sheldon Outdoor Education Centre from October 22 to October 24, 2014.

Permission forms and additional information, which includes a packing list and sample daily itinerary, will be sent home soon.

In class today, we watched the slide show, which can be viewed here. Please keep in mind that we will not be doing all of the activities shown. For example, we will neither be cycling nor working with bees.

Since Sheldon is a TDSB facility, all policies and procedures of the board are adhered too. We will be travelling the approximately 90 mins journey by school bus.
